Book Blurb
This book brings together ten historical essays on the six colonial and state capital cities in Australia. The essays reflect the rising interest in urban history, and the recognition that the history of the capital cities is one of the largest parts of Australian history. Two essays consider city development as a whole: the emergence of commercial city in the nineteenth century, and the major increase in the relative importance of the capital city in the twentieth century. Chapters on Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide overview the establishment and growth of these cities; additional essays on Melbourne and Sydney highlight the contribution of the public utilities to urban improvement, and the dependence. on the ‘developer’ for land and rented accommodation. The studies of Brisbane, Perth and Hobart concentrate on the social impact of urban life over a more limited time span. Two essays are published for the first time; several of those reprinted with revision have been influential in reinterpreting Australian history and encouraging new research.
