“Never be ashamed of being Aboriginal”
Edith De Giambattista was born 28 November 1933 in Kojonup. Edith now resides in Lockridge where she has lived for the past 28 years. Over her 50 year career, Edith has dedicated herself to improving the wellbeing of Aboriginal children and Aboriginal seniors living in Western Australia. She spent many years working with the Department for Child Protection across a range of programs. Edith has also been involved in important initiatives such as the Home and Community Care Program run by Bulup Kulung, non-profit organisation that supports elderly and disabled Aboriginal people.
Edith’s strong community spirit and sense of social justice is also evident in her voluntary work. Over her life, Edith has volunteered with numerous community organisations and agencies in Perth, including Lifeline and NAIDOC Perth. She has served on the NAIDOC committee for more than 20 years, re-instating the Debutante Ball for young Aboriginal people and promoting popular events such as the Miss NAIDOC competition. In 2010, Edith’s many achievements were recognised when she won the NAIDOC Female Elder of the Year Award.Edith continues to give back to her community through her work with Gurlongga Njininj Child Care Centre, sharing her warmth and creating a positive difference in many lives.
