“Listen to the Elders… if the young people listen, that’s the best advice they can get”
May is a Wadjuk and Yued Elder, born in New Norcia in 1943
She and her younger brother, both members of the Stolen Generation, were separated from their parents when May was nine years old. May spent the next five years at Now Norcia Mission, eventually re-joining her family in Northam at the age of 14 where she began her working life in a domestic position.
May moved throughout the Wheatbelt with her late husband, Walter ‘Wally’ McGuire, and their children. While living in Kellerberrin, May worked for the Welfare Department and Kellerberrin Hospital. In 1978, she moved to Perth with her family so she could be with her children while they pursued their education.
May continued her career within the health industry by undertaking studies in health at Marr Mooditj College. Marr Mooditj was awarded the prestigious Sasakawa Health Prize for Primary Care by the World Health Organisation. May, a top student, was selected to attend the award ceremony with Dr Joan Winch at the United Nations in Geneva. After completing her studies at Marr Mooditj, May went on to work for the Aboriginal Medical Service and Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service.
May met her much beloved husband, Peter Philips, in 1994 when she began working with the Aboriginal Visitors Scheme, supporting those who found themselves within the prison system. Their first date was to Perth’s annual NAIDOC Ball. May and Peter have not left each other’s side since.
Between May and Peter, they proudly share nine children, 30 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. May is looking forward to growing old with Peter and spending time with their family.
