Fierce independence, resolute spirit, resourcefulness, and a willingness to tackle any challenge typify West Australians and their businesses. Today, Perth and Western Australia are ideally placed to take full advantage of the growing global economy, particularly the fastest growing economies of East Asia. Many of the individuals and business in this book recognise the state’s geographic and commercial proximity to Asian and have built strong, profitable enterprises to service these markets.
This book is about the individuals and enterprises which have developed using Western Australia’s wealth of resources and their own entrepreneurial talent and business accumen. Such efforts have seen 10 per cent of Australia’s population account for 27 per cent of the nations’s exports, 68.6 per cent of this going to Asia.
The enterprises that are responsible for this enormous contribution to the nation’s wealth are many and varied and include Australia’s largest resource development - the North West Shelf; one of the world’s more recent large-scale diamond mines; the largest pearling operation in Australia; one of the nation’s biggest commercial ship-building enterprises; and the small but highly successful Margaret River vineyards.
The essential resources of the state is its human capital supported by the institutions as the University of Western Australia and Curtain, Murdoch and Edith Cowan Universities. Along with the ‘exporting’ of education there exists a long-term commitment to excellence in researcg and in profitable collaboration between universities and industry. It is no surprise that the orbital engine hails from Western Australia or that the state is a world leader in agricultural and mining research and development.
Perth, ‘the city of lights’, is truly Australia’s resort capital. situated on the banks of the Swan River, encircled by Kings Park and wide open spaces, visitors and local alike enjoy rowing, sailing and fishing on ‘the Swan’ or walking and cycling in the city’s abundant parklands. The hot summers and mild winters encourage outdoor living and a relaxed way of life and conducting business.
Western Australians have time to enjoy what Perth has to offer while harnessing the state’s wealth. A spitit of independance and determination to succeed, despite the odds, is seared into collective consciousness of West Australians and establishes Western Australia’s status as the powerhouse of Australia and gateway to Asia.
